The AmaZulu Private Game Reserve is home to AmaKhosi Safari Lodge, situated in the heart of what was once the great Kingdom of the Zulu in northern KwaZulu-Natal, near Swaziland. It is here, nearly two centuries ago, Zulu impis (regiments) roamed the northern borders of the kingdom established by the founder of the Zulu nation, Shaka Zulu. The AmaZulu Reserve boasts a wide variety of vegetation, including lowland grassveld and thornveld which, in turn, means a wide diversity of flora. The scenery changes as one moves around the reserve, from umbrella thorns in the north, open grassland and smaller trees in the south, to the thick bush covering the mountains of the western side. AmaKhosi Safari Lodge is situated on the banks of the Mkuze River in the 10 000ha Private Game Reserve. A five and a half hour drive from Johannesburg and four hours from Durban, it is ideally located in a blend of savannah, wetlands and mountains. AmaKhosi is home to quality Big Five game viewing, 15 different species of antelope as well as over 400 bird species. It is also an area where cheetah is prolific.
