Flora/Fauna in South Africa
South africa is rich in a variety of flora and fauna, known collectivly
as fynbos, with many plant species occuring only here
and no where else in the world.

The coast of flowers is the name given to the spectacular natural flower garden
thats winds around the western cape, a garden that yields a profusion of brightly
colored wild flowers. The mountain overlooking the coast is rich in a wide variety
of proteas. The protea family are known for their varied appearances and
extraordinary individuality. Here in South Afica we have 13 genera and nearly 400 species.

Proteas and most other fynbos species are protected in South Africa, thus picking of these
wild flowers is prohibited. However they may be purchased from flower shops/vendors.
When dry, the natural aroma of the many flavours of the fynbos are released, making it perfect
for potpouri; so make sure you take some home with you as a reminder of your fantastic voyage in South Africa.

The dry desert of the namaqualand comes to life for a few short weeks each year. Situated in the heart of the westen cape,
this dry and arrid region is carpeted with flowers in huge abundance and made up of a plethora of species and colors. The orange, yellow,
pink, purple colors contrast to the dry stark surrounding desert and create a landscape that is unique to this area in all the world.
When visiting this area in Spring time, be sure to visit the many fesivals that celebrate this great specticle flowers
