Wildlife/Birdlife in South Africa

South Africa has a rich bio-diversity of animal and bird life, attributed to the varied climates and terrain that stretches across the country and includes beaches, dense forest and deserts. South Africa is home to thousands of species of animal and bird life, including all of the big five, namely: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. There are many game reserves and game lodges throughout the country that offer both safari's and hunting.

The Springbok, a small beautiful creature, is unique to South Africa and finds its home in the Karoo. There was a time when Springbok heards numbered in the thousands and would migrate in the hundred thousands in search of water, creating one of the greatest specticles of the natural world. The Springbok is worth special mention as it is the national emblem of South Africa.

The southern and south-western coasts of South Africa provide sea birds with an almost ideal home. The Benguela Current supports a prolific population of medium sized fish which sea birds find particularly to their liking.
